Susan has always wanted to visit her grave, imagining a real person. I had my doubts but went along since St. Martinville, where Evangeline and her lover are supposedly buried is next to New Iberia, the home of Dave Robicheaux, ex New Orleans cop who runs a bait shop on the bayou there and has untold adventures. James Lee Burke is the author of the Robicheaux series, he has written other stuff as well and if you have not yet read him, treat yourself. While in New Iberia we discovered a beautiful spot, Avery Island. This little island jungle garden is the home of the world famous "Tabasco Sauce." If you get down there, take the tour of the tabasco factory and be sure to tour the island garden, it is truly old south beautiful. Anyway, we did not see Robicheaux, but we did meet some truly nice locals at the town bar, listen to some music, eat at the same diner that James Lee Burke does and visited the famous Evangeline Oak.
After leaving New Iberia we went up to Shreveport, La., We went there to see a festival but the rain was continous so we hit the museums instead. My favorite was the auditorium where the old Louisiana Hayride originated from. I got to stand on the same stage, sit in the same dressing room, that Elvis, Hank Williams, Ernest Tubbs, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and untold others had been. Very, Very neat. Check it out if you ever get to Shreveport.
Here is a picture of Evangeline's Oak,, if you want to see more pics of the area look in the folder, Avery Island.
